Sandbag Defences Tested To Limit

Story Date 22nd July 2008.
Story Submitted 22nd July 2008.

Southwolds’s River Blyth sandbag defences were yesterday tested to their limit. Following strong winds in the North Sea a 3 metre surge which was recorded on Lowestoft’s tide gauge raised water levels in the Blyth to the top of the sandbag defences. Blyth Estuary Group members had been keeping a watchful eye on the unusually high tide and were relieved when the water levels began to subside. A close inspection of the defences revealed that there had been no movement or damage to them.
